Life of a Showgirl Cocktail: The Portofino Orange Glitter Sparkler

Since Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, has everyone obsessed with the color orange, I’d say an orange cocktail recipe is in order!

When you think of orange cocktails, your mind might go to an Aperol Spritz, Paloma, or Tequila Sunrise. But the Orange Era deserves something a little more special.

After all, Taylor herself has reminded us that Portofino Orange Glitter is more than a shade: it’s a vibe. You want a cocktail that captures the essence of orange, a hint of Italy, and just the right amount of shimmer.

Enter: the Portofino Orange Glitter Sparkler.

Bold, refreshing, glittery, and unapologetically orange, this cocktail tastes a little like a mimosa, but with way more personality.

Whether you’re hosting a Taylor Swift party or simply listening at home, this Life of a Showgirl cocktail is the perfect pairing for the album.

Ingredients

The ingredients for this cocktail are easy to find at most grocery stores, but a few specifics really make the difference.

Cocktail ingredients displayed on a kitchen counter: Trader Joe’s bag of mandarins, Vodka of the Gods, Cointreau, La Marca Prosecco mini bottle, grenadine, and a jar of edible orange glitter.

Fresh Mandarin Juice

This is the secret to the cocktail’s vibrant color and refreshing flavor. Fresh mandarin juice (not bottled tangerine or regular orange juice) gives the best result. It’s sweeter, tangier, and deeper in color.

I tested bottled tangerine juice and can confirm it just doesn’t taste the same. For best results, use clementines or Murcotts (the kind sold as Cuties or Halos). They’re usually seedless and easy to juice with a handheld citrus juicer.

You’ll need about 4–5 mandarins per cocktail.

Vodka

Vodka plays a behind-the-scenes role with its neutral flavor and clear color. Since you’re only using a small amount, you don’t need top-shelf quality. I like Trader Joe’s Vodka of the Gods, since it’s affordable and easy to find.

Cointreau or Triple Sec

For orange liqueur, you can use either Cointreau or Triple Sec. I slightly preferred Cointreau for its complexity, but Triple Sec works almost as well.

If you want to highlight the Italian inspiration, you could also try Luxardo Triplum, an Italian triple sec. I haven’t tested it yet, since it’s difficult to find, but it would be a fitting match for this cocktail.

Grenadine

You only need a few drops of grenadine. It’s primarily to deepen the color, but it also adds a tiny boost of sweetness and a touch of pomegranate flavor.

Edible Orange Glitter

The sparkle is what makes this cocktail magic. While optional, edible orange glitter gives the drink its signature wow factor. This is the exact orange glitter I used.

Prosecco

Finally, you’ll top the drink with Prosecco, which ties it to Portofino and adds the bubbles it needs. Look for a dry (brut) Prosecco so the cocktail doesn’t end up too sweet.

Tip: Mini split bottles are perfect (and so cute) if you’re only making 1–3 cocktails.

Serving & Garnishing Tips to Make It Sparkle

With a showstopping drink like this, presentation makes a difference.

My favorite way to serve it is in coupe glasses or champagne flutes. I especially love my gold-rimmed coupes from Amazon because they instantly elevate any cocktail.

Each drink makes about 7.5 oz total, so aim for glassware in that range. My coupes hold around 7 oz, so in the photos, I didn’t fill them quite to the top. If you prefer more room, flutes or even white wine glasses work beautifully too.

This cocktail already sparkles on its own, but garnishes and styling can make it even more fun.

Dried Orange Slices

Elegant and refined, dehydrated orange slices have a softer, more subdued color. They’re too brittle to skewer, but they look beautiful floated on top of a coupe or slit and set on the rim of a flute or wine glass. (I found my orange slices on Amazon.)

Candied Orange Slices

Vivid and eye-catching, candied orange slices are sturdier than dehydrated ones, although not quite as delicate. They’re usually easy to find at Trader Joe’s, and can be skewered on a cocktail pick (cut in half first for balance).

I used these gold disco ball picks as a nod to the album. Since orange is warm-toned, gold felt right, and honestly, I’m just a gold girlie.

Turquoise Cocktail Napkins

A little pop of turquoise sets off the orange and gold beautifully. These turquoise cocktail napkins are a simple detail, but they add to the Taylor Swift-inspired aesthetic and make the presentation feel intentional.

FAQs

Have questions about this Orange Era drink? See below for answers to FAQs.

Can I make this a mocktail?

I haven’t tested this as a mocktail, but sparkling water alone might taste a little watered down. A lemon-lime soda like Sprite or 7 Up will give more flavor, though it will make the drink sweeter.

Can I use a different kind of orange juice?

Fresh mandarin juice is what gives this cocktail its unique flavor and vibrant color. You can substitute orange juice, but it won’t be quite as tangy or bright. I also tested it with bottled tangerine juice, and it just didn’t taste as good as fresh juice.

Can I use a different kind of sparkling wine besides Prosecco?

Yes! While Prosecco is what gives the cocktail its Italian flair, you can substitute another dry sparkling wine.

Can I batch this cocktail or make it ahead of time?

Because this recipe includes bubbles and glitter, batching can be a little tricky. It is possible, but there are some trade-offs to keep in mind — mainly that the drink needs to be well chilled, and the glitter will settle fairly quickly.

You have two options, depending on how you’re serving it. For either option, I recommend batching no more than a few hours in advance, since the citrus tastes best when it’s freshly squeezed.

Option 1: Classic Style (Served Up, No Ice)

  1. Stir together all ingredients except the glitter and Prosecco in a large pitcher or drink dispenser, and add just under 1 ounce of water per serving to mimic dilution from shaking.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. When serving, stir in the glitter, pour into glasses, and top with Prosecco.

Note: Since this version is served without ice, it’s best enjoyed immediately after removing from the fridge, while still cold.

Option 2: Spritz Style (Served Over Ice)

  1. Stir together all ingredients except the glitter and Prosecco in a large pitcher or drink dispenser — no added water needed.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Right before pouring, stir in the glitter so it doesn’t stick to the ice.
  4. Then, pour over ice and top with Prosecco.
  5. Add extra Prosecco or sparkling water to taste, if desired.

Note: Serving this version over ice helps it stay cold longer, but it will still lose some fizz, and the glitter will settle. For best results, enjoy soon after removing from the fridge, and give it a gentle swirl to bring the sparkle back.

Bonus tip: For even more flexibility (and a little drama), I often batch cocktails in a concentrated form and serve them over large, clear ice cubes. It maintains flavor, chill, and presentation, especially for high-impact cocktails. Keep reading below for my full batching tutorial and clear ice guide.
