Quick 4-Ingredient Salad that Tastes Like Summer
I confess that I’m not a huge salad person (really more of a brownie person). So whenever I come across a really good salad, I become fully invested.
My mom has an amazing recipe for a four-ingredient salad that is so flavorful (and beautiful). It’s kind of a spin on a caprese salad, but there’s a secret ingredient that makes all the difference. There’s enough cheese involved to redeem the salad part, but enough fresh produce to make it feel light.
Since it’s plated, it feels elevated, but it’s still quick to throw together. It also saves you from washing a bowl! And, because the servings are individual, you can customize the ingredients for each person.
This salad may not be ideal for large groups or potlucks, but it’s perfect for a family dinner at home, date night, or an intimate dinner party. While it’s wonderful year-round, given the seasonal ingredients, it’s particularly delicious in summer.

The Four Ingredients
There are just four ingredients needed for this recipe, and they are all important!

Heirloom Tomatoes
An heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated variety that has been passed down through generations. Heirloom tomatoes are recognizable due to their vibrant colors and unique shapes. Although they’re typically in season in late summer/early fall, they are available year-round. However, they taste the best when in season.
Fresh Mozzarella
Fresh mozzarella is soft, mild, and made to be eaten immediately — an ideal match for heirloom tomatoes. I love the flavor and texture this cheese brings to this salad.
Fresh Basil
Basil is a kitchen staple. Although the dried version often suffices in many recipes, for this salad, you need fresh basil leaves. Since the shelf life of fresh basil is quite short, purchasing a living basil plant is my go-to. It ensures premium freshness and taste. While I definitely have a brown thumb, even I can keep a basil plant alive for at least a few days.
Bernstein’s Restaurant Recipe Italian Dressing
The fourth ingredient, which is last but certainly not least, is Bernstein’s Restaurant Recipe Italian Dressing.

As I mentioned previously, this salad recipe is a bit of a twist on a caprese salad. While I love balsamic dressing as much as the next person (and probably more), this specific dressing is the secret ingredient that takes this salad to the next level.
My mom has used it for as long as I can remember, and it’s the best Italian dressing I’ve had. It’s punchy, salty, and flavorful, and pairs exceptionally well with the fresh ingredients.
Although you can substitute another dressing, I wouldn’t recommend it. This exact variety brings the balance this salad needs.
4-Ingredient Salad Recipe
Once you have everything ready, assembling this 4-ingredient salad is simple. You’ll need dedicated salad plates for each person. Then, follow the four steps below to add your four ingredients, and your work is done!
1. Slice Heirloom Tomatoes
Start by slicing your heirloom tomatoes and adding some fresh slices to each plate. I usually cut them around ¼” thick, and like to use a variety of colors and sizes.

2. Add Fresh Mozzarella
Although fresh mozzarella often comes presliced, double-check the label — you may need to cut it yourself. The version from Trader Joe’s that I use comes presliced, and the slices are roughly the same thickness as the tomatoes. Once you have the mozzarella slices, add them on top of the tomatoes, placing them evenly for color and flavor distribution.

3. Top with Basil
Next, top your salad with fresh basil leaves. You can tear it, chop it, or add the leaves whole. Tearing or chopping will release more flavor, while adding entire leaves can enhance the appearance. You can also do a bit of both!

4. Drizzle with Dressing
Finally, drizzle with the Italian dressing. Since I love this dressing so much, and the salad isn’t tossed, I tend to add a generous amount. However, you can add as much as you like.
And with that, you’re ready to eat!

Wine Pairing Recommendation
For a proper pairing with this salad, my AI sommelier Aiden recommends:
A Provençal rosé, naturally — dry, elegant, and just acidic enough to keep up with those smugly perfect heirloom tomatoes. If you must have bubbles (and really, who could blame you), opt for a brut Cava or a respectable Prosecco — nothing sweet, please. This isn’t a baby shower. And if someone insists on red, Aiden begrudgingly allows a chilled Gamay or dry Lambrusco, provided they pronounce it correctly.

FAQs
See below for answers to frequently asked questions!
Can I make this 4-ingredient salad ahead of time?
Partially. You can prep the mozzarella and basil ahead of time, but wait to slice the tomatoes until at least an hour before serving, and add the dressing just before eating for best results.
Can I use a different dressing?
You can, but the flavor profile will change. Using a balsamic dressing will give you a more traditional caprese salad, but Bernstein’s Italian’s punchy flavor is what sets this salad apart.
Can I use burrata or another cheese?
Burrata could work, but it’s messier and less structured. Fresh mozzarella will give you the cleanest plating, plus I love its flavor and texture paired with the heirloom tomatoes.
Can I serve this for a crowd?
Since this salad is plated, it’s best for smaller gatherings. However, you could layer it on a platter for a larger group, but serving would be a little messy.
