Over the Moon Baby Shower Ideas: Decor, Food, & More
When I first started looking for a baby shower theme, I didn’t have a strong vision yet. I just knew I wanted something cute, elevated, and gender-neutral. We didn’t know our baby’s gender at the time, and there was no way I was going to wait to start planning until we found out!
As soon as I came across “Over the Moon,” I knew it was the one. I love the joyful sentiment behind it, and it naturally lends itself to an elegant event.
So I’m excited to share my favorite Over the Moon baby shower ideas, including decor, food and drinks, favors, and activities, plus how it all came together at my shower.

Theme Overview
This celestial-inspired theme feels elevated while still conveying a lot of joy. It naturally overlaps with other celestial themes like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “Love You to the Moon & Back,” which makes it easy to find decor inspiration.
“Over the Moon” can also be branded as “We’re Over the Moon,” though I prefer the shorter version since it feels more streamlined.
One of my favorite parts about this theme is that it works just as well for a bridal shower as it does for a baby shower!
Over the Moon Color Palette
When choosing a color palette for an Over the Moon baby shower, there are a few different directions you can take. While the theme is inspired by the night sky, you don’t have to take it literally.
I wanted a more airy, daytime feel, and since I already decorate with a lot of white and gold, that felt like a natural starting point. When I first chose this theme, we didn’t know our baby’s gender, which made picking an accent color a bit more challenging.
After we found out we were having a boy, I went with dusty blue as an accent. For a girl, I likely would have chosen lavender or blush.
I put together a few different color palette options depending on your preferences and your baby’s gender. You can keep it neutral, add more color, or mix metals, whatever you want — it’s your shower and the sky is quite literally the limit!

I ended up choosing the “Dreamy Celestial” color palette for mine.
Key Elements
While this theme is inspired by the night sky, you don’t have to lean into that direction fully.
But you can still incorporate nighttime elements even without using dark blue as an accent color.
Crescent moons, stars or constellations, and clouds are the most common motifs for this theme. Using silver or gold metallics for moon and star elements adds dimension and visual interest.
My Over the Moon Baby Shower
Now that we’ve covered the basics, I’ll walk you through my baby shower and how we brought the “Over the Moon” theme to life.
Quick shout-out — although I planned my baby shower, I had an enormous amount of support from my husband, family, and friends, and could not have done it without them! If you’re planning a shower, definitely get help, because it makes a world of difference.

Decor Ideas
Decor is my favorite part of any event (besides maybe dessert… it’s a close call). I love it because it really sets the stage for your gathering.
Here’s how we decorated my home for my shower:
Moon & Stars Balloons
Balloons are such a fun, celebratory element. A balloon arch makes a lovely focal point, though it can be a decent amount of work (we had lots of help).

For my shower, I used balloon arch stands, which made the process much easier. Normally, I’m wrangling balloon tape and trying to attach everything to the wall. We still used fishing line to help secure the larger arch, but the stands made a big difference.
I started with this Moon & Stars kit and supplemented it with white and dusty blue balloons for more color and size variation.
If a full arch feels like too much, a few smaller clusters can work just as well. Whatever you choose, I highly recommend a balloon pump. It’s some of the best $15 I’ve ever spent!
We also picked up white and gold star helium balloons from Michael’s. We tied some out front and used a few at the drinks station.

Gold Moon & Star Garlands
I found these moon and star garlands and hung them in a few spots around my home. If I’d had more time, I would’ve added even more. They’re beautiful, though they can get tangled if you’re not careful.
“Over the Moon” Sign
You don’t necessarily need a sign spelling out your theme, but I think it’s a fun way to tie everything together. I used this sign but left out the “We’re,” along with the moon and star elements, since they didn’t fit my color palette.
We hung the sign behind the balloon arch using fishing line instead of the included string, which felt bulky and was more visible than I wanted.
Dusty Blue Table Runners
In addition to white tablecloths, I layered in dusty blue table runners on tables and other flat surfaces. They add color, depth, and texture.

Flowers
Flowers are beautiful for any event, but they feel especially fitting for a baby shower. I used baby’s breath along with white and blue hydrangeas, since they matched my color palette and had a soft, “cloud-like” feel.
One of my go-to party tricks is dispersing florals throughout a space in bud vases, though I also included a couple of larger arrangements.

Fairy Lights
I love any excuse to use fairy lights, and for an Over the Moon baby shower, they can double as little “stars.” These battery-operated lights are my go-to. The battery packs are easy to hide, and they last a long time.

Candles
Since my shower took place during the day, I only lit a couple of candles. But for an evening event, filling the room with candlelight would be so magical.
Signage & Printables
Displaying framed signage is a great way to share helpful information with your guests while tying everything back to the theme.
I created a mix of functional and decorative signs, printed them at FedEx, and framed them.

If you want to design your own, I used Cinzel and Josefin Sans fonts since they have a celestial feel. Or, if you’d rather keep it simple, you can download my signs for free by subscribing to my email list below.
Before moving on to food and drinks, I want to share one decor element I didn’t end up using as planned. I saw a lot of cute inspiration on Pinterest using fiber fill as “clouds” along dusty blue table runners, but when I tried it… it just looked cheesy.
I did end up using a bit of fiber fill in my favor basket (more on that later), but skipped it everywhere else since the setup looked cleaner without it.
Food & Drink Inspiration
Now that we’ve gone over decor, let’s talk about food!

Astro Appetizers
Apps, especially finger foods, are my go-to for parties. They’re easier for large groups, and they’re cute.
Some of the “Astro Appetizers” we served were explicitly themed, while others just had fun, themed names.
For serving, I used white and gold appetizer plates, gold forks, and gold star napkins.

Star-Shaped Tea Sandwiches
For a fun finger food, we served star-shaped egg salad sandwiches, using a cookie cutter to cut out the bread, then filling them.
To save space, we displayed the sandwiches on tiered trays.
We had enough food that we only needed one type of sandwich, but you could easily offer multiple fillings or even make moon-shaped versions.

Chicken Salad Crescent Moons
We also served chicken salad crescent moon sandwiches.

Originally, my plan was to use Costco croissants with Costco chicken salad. However, my amazing husband (who spent many hours prepping for this event) missed the memo that the croissants needed to be crescent-shaped and came home with 36 enormous, non-crescent-shaped croissants.
Yes, there may have been a few tears.
I didn’t realize how hard it is to find true crescent-shaped croissants, and since they don’t have a great shelf life, you can’t buy them too far in advance.
Fortunately (or unfortunately?), I’m stubborn. We picked up a few packs of crescent rolls the day before, baked them according to the package directions, and filled them the day of the shower.
They probably weren’t quite as tasty as flaky croissants would have been, but it worked out well that they were smaller and easier to eat.
Milky Way Parfaits
We also served these beautiful Milky Way parfaits made with yogurt, granola, and blueberries to match the color scheme.

Using mini parfait cups and displaying them on a cupcake stand helped save space while adding to the presentation.
Midnight Caprese Skewers
You’ve probably had traditional caprese skewers with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. For a twist that fits the Over the Moon color palette, try swapping the tomatoes for blackberries.

We used gold star cocktail picks for serving.
Out of this World Charcuterie Board
I’m pretty much incapable of throwing a party without charcuterie, and this baby shower was no exception.
For a themed board, we leaned into blue and white with blueberries, blackberries, white cheeses, and coconut strips. We also cut a few pieces of cheese into moon and star shapes and placed them on top.

We also served a few apps that weren’t explicitly themed. Even just giving them fun names, like “Starry Sausage Bites” (pigs in a blanket) or “Galaxy Grapes,” helps make the menu feel intentional.

Starlight Sweets
I refuse to have a party without dessert. It’s the most important meal of the day, after all… right?

Celestial Cake & Cupcakes
For my shower, I made a 6-inch layered vanilla cake and cupcakes, then decorated them with tiny gold star sprinkles. I added a cake topper from Etsy and displayed everything on an acrylic stand.

If you don’t want to bake or order a custom cake, an easy budget option is to buy a plain cake or cupcakes and dress them up with a topper and sprinkles.
Star-Dusted Donuts & Cloud Kiss Meringues
For additional desserts, I picked up mini Hostess powdered sugar donuts and Trader Joe’s vanilla meringues and stacked them on a couple of cake stands. They looked pretty and were easy for guests to grab.

Moonlight Lychee Mimosas
A signature drink makes any event more fun. In addition to water and La Croix, Moonlight Lychee Mimosas (both virgin and alcoholic) were the main featured beverage.

Lychee is such a delicious, unique flavor, and it ties in really well with a celestial color palette. These mimosas are so good and also ridiculously easy to make.
Check out my lychee mimosa recipe for more details on how to prepare them!
Batching bubbly drinks can be tricky, but this worked really well. I mixed the mimosas in my large drink dispensers and added frozen lychees and lychee juice cubes to keep them cold without diluting them.
I was originally planning to serve the mimosas in stemless plastic flutes. However, since we were serving drinks outside, I realized they’d be at the mercy of the wind, so we opted for real champagne flutes instead. (My mom and I have amassed quite a collection, but renting is actually pretty affordable, too.)

Just be sure to keep all ingredients chilled as long as possible and wait until the last minute to assemble the mimosas so they stay cold and sparkling throughout the event.
Favors
Favors are a special addition to any shower, and I’m especially a fan of consumable ones. I found these adorable moon and star soap favors on Amazon, of all places.

They do require a bit of assembly, and a few broke in transit, but overall, I was really happy with the quality and price.
I displayed them near the door in a gold basket with fiber fill to represent clouds (the one place it didn’t feel too cheesy) and added a sign to remind guests to take one on their way out.

Activities
If you know me, you know I’m not a huge fan of party games — especially baby shower games. They often involve more poop than I’d like…and I knew for a fact I didn’t want anyone guessing how big my stomach is.
But I did come up with a more low-key option: Moonlight Memories: Who’s Who?
Fun fact: the title is moon-themed, but the game itself isn’t. I created a Google Slides presentation that we displayed on our TV, featuring fun facts about my husband and me as babies. Guests guessed who each fact belonged to by raising their hands.
I also included baby photos for each reveal, so it doubled as a slideshow.

If you want to recreate this for your own shower, I made an editable slide deck template for just $4.99 that takes about 10 minutes to customize.
Over the Moon is such a fun, elegant theme, and I had a total blast planning my shower! If you’re considering a celestial-inspired baby (or bridal!) shower, I hope some of these ideas help you with yours.
