Best Places to Hang Stockings Without a Mantel

I’ve always thought that Christmas stockings hung from a mantel are so adorable. But if you don’t have a mantel, you might be feeling a little sad. That was me a couple of months ago, since we recently moved into a mantel-less home.

Never fear. There are lots of unique ways to display your stockings, even without a mantel. With a little creativity, you can find the best place in your home to hang them so they still feel like a beautiful focal point in your Christmas decor, while also playing their very important role on Christmas morning.

In this post, I’m sharing all of my favorite ways to hang stockings, no fireplace or mantel required.

1. Stocking Stand

One of the easiest solutions for hanging stockings without a mantel is to invest in a free-standing stocking stand.

This is the option I chose, since it works best with our current home’s layout. We’re renting a house that was built in the 50s, and we love it, but let’s just say it has a lot of character. There’s a huge stone fireplace, but no mantel, so the stocking stand adds height in front of the fireplace and helps break things up visually.

A stocking stand can be a bit of an investment, depending on the quality, but I found an affordable one on Amazon that’s perfect for us. It’s gold, which works well with our existing decor, and it comes with a good number and variety of hooks, making it easy to hang multiple stockings.

If you also have a fireplace but no mantel, this is an especially natural choice. Even if you don’t have a fireplace, though, a stocking stand can still work well. You just need to identify the right spot in the room for it.

Ideally, you’ll want other decor nearby, such as a Christmas tree, furniture, or decorative accents, so the stand feels intentional and blends seamlessly with the rest of your space rather than sticking out awkwardly.

2. TV Stand

Another natural place to hang stockings without a mantel is on your TV stand.

TV stands are often positioned near the center of the living room, which makes them a great spot for stockings. While they’re not usually as tall as a mantel, many are high enough to accommodate stockings comfortably. Adding stockings to your TV stand is a practical and cute way to dress up your living room for the holidays.

Hanging stockings from your TV stand is also quite simple. Just use the same type of stocking hanger hooks you would normally use on a mantel.

3. Console Table

A console table in your entryway or another part of your home is another great option for hanging stockings. Since these tables tend to be narrow in depth, they work especially well for stocking decor.

One potential downside is that console tables are often not located near the center of the home, and I personally like stockings to be in the middle of everything. That said, you could always rearrange your furniture to make the stockings more central. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with having them closer to the door if that’s your preference.

Similar to a TV stand, you can use regular stocking hanger hooks to hang stockings from your console table.

4. Coat Rack or Tree

One easy option for displaying your stockings is to hang them from a coat rack or coat tree.

This is a quick and simple solution, since coat racks and trees have built-in hooks that make hanging stockings easy.

Similar to a console table, coat racks and trees are typically not placed in the center of the room, which can be a downside. That said, a coat tree can often be moved to a more central location if you prefer.

5. Blanket or Decorative Ladder

If you want something a little more artsy, a blanket or decorative ladder is a unique place to hang your stockings.

You can’t use traditional mantel stocking hanger hooks for this setup, but cord, twine, decorative ribbon, or the right-sized metal S-hooks all work well for hanging stockings on the rungs.

Staggering your stockings on the ladder helps keep the arrangement from feeling too symmetrical and adds visual interest.

6. Stairwell

If you have stairs in your home, hanging stockings along the stairwell can be a really cute decorative option.

This is probably the least functional choice if you’re looking for a spot where stockings can be easily filled and displayed on Christmas morning. That said, you can always move them for the big day.

To hang stockings along the stairs, use ribbon or cord to tie them to the banister. Adding a garland along the railing can also help tie the whole look together.

And there you have it. You don’t need a mantel to display stockings in your home. With just a little creativity, you can find the perfect spot for your stockings this Christmas.
